This old mansion is our neighborhood library. I got a library card right away.
The interior of the Latter Library is just as elegant as the outside. The carriage house out back is also filled with wonderful donated books. It opens twice a week for a book sale. (Click on a picture to see it full size.)
I came to New Orleans with one book-The Yellow House, which is a story of a home and family in New Orleans, an unromanticized, unsparing, compelling biography. (Thanks Deidre.) The other books I picked up at the library sale and here and there. This is a good book town. OK, some of these are shallow. Don’t judge me.
Ann and Bill are here from Johnson City, Tenn., for a couple weeks, staying right next door. Here we’re watching the sunset on the Mississippi.
Audobon Park by Bird Island. The middle one is a big white egret (there are all kinds of egrets, not sure which one this is). Turtles lined up on the log. The ones with their wings outstretched are anhingas. (Click a photo to see more detail.) There are thousands of ibis, a couple of swans, a big white goose with a big, aggressive personality, and many other birds. I’ll post photos when I get good ones. I’m still trying to figure out which is the bird that keeps going “Unh Unh. Unh Unh. Unh Unh.” A very negative bird.
First Parade of the Mardi Gras season, Chewbacchus, celebrating all things Star Wars and science fiction and whatever. Big happy crowds. Silly costumes.
Wow, I love it. Atmosphere, atmosphere. So ceremonious and mysterious. And wacky. Amazing nature shots. What are those tall, lopsided lumps by the water?
The tall, lopsided lumps are cypress knees. These swamp loving trees have shallow roots but stay upright by virtue of their widespread lumpy root system. These are not the trees that get knocked over in hurricanes.
Looks so fun. I’m a big Star Wars fan so I appreciate all the Princess Leias in attendance. Don’t forget to go to the 1815 Battle of New Orleans Historic Site! It’s like a 20 minute drive, but there is also an amazing crab shack on the way where you just order boiled blue crab by the each, depending on size, and beer and that’s all they sell. Worth the trip!
There were a lot of Princes Leias but I only saw one Wookie, a very big one with pink fur. I missed them, as I’ve always crushed hard on the Wookie. We’ll check out the Battle of New Orleans.
It’s me, anonymous Ellie, who will never talk to you again because no matter where you travel, no matter how elegant the library, you are going to get shallow books! Seriously, that library looks like a good reason to move there. Did you get a “geaux cup” while barhopping yet? First night of Mardi Gras looks fabulous. My friend who lives there didn’t go because it was a chilly night, and she “didn’t move to NOLA to be cold,”

Also was sorry to see that Steve is smoking and drinking again but I do like his hair piled up like that.
